PSOMS Member Alert: COVID-19 Update May 10, 2020
On Friday the Governor and the Secretary of Health amended the closure orders issued on March 19th “to remove the prohibition on “elective”, i.e. non-urgent and non emergent dental procedures”. The DOH has requested that “each dental provider should apply their clinical judgement along with their knowledge of the incidences of COVID-19 cases in their area, the needs of their patients and staff, and the availability of necessary supplies to assess whether to re-engage in the provision of non-urgent and non-emergent care”.
On Saturday the Dental Coalition on Covid-19 met to discuss the ramifications of the lifting of the ban.
As of Friday May 8th we can reopen our practices. Each clinician must use their judgement as to what procedures they intend to perform. Since oral surgical procedures often generate aerosols we must adhere to the guidelines set forth by the CDC and OSHA. We must provide appropriate protection for the patient, our staff and of course ourselves. We are not on the “list” to be guaranteed the ability to procure PPE’s so we must obtain them on our own.
Shortly, we will all be receiving communication from the PDA which asks us to send letters to both our Legislators and to the suppliers of PPE’s to allow us to have unfettered access to PPE’s. I urge all of you to copy the letters and to send them to the Governor, the Secretary of Health and our state representatives.
As Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons we are all trained in sterile techniques, high speed evacuation and even negative pressure operating rooms. Please use the AAOMS and ADA resources as we begin to re-open our offices and plan our practice strategies with the “new normal” in patient care.
PSOMS Member Alert: COVID-19 Update May 8, 2020
We have all been waiting for today’s press conference by the Secretary of Health. Her report initially looks favorable for the re-opening of our practices however there are still some concerns secondary to the ambiguity of the document. Please be assured your leaders and our lobbyists have been in contact with the Department of Health and with the PDA. There is a meeting scheduled for tomorrow for the coalition and as soon as we have more clarification I will email everyone.
I have provided the links to the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s COVID-19 webpage
And the AAOMS COVID -19 update page.
Please use these resources as we begin to re-open our offices and plan our practice strategies with the “new normal” in patient care.
